pavilions

fall 2017 & spring 2018

type: community garden pavilions

location: Muncie, IN

This design-build project was multi-faceted; it involved community engagement, working with real clients, design, structures, construction, photography, graphic design, and so much more. The project was led by our studio professor who, so far, has led five semesters of about 15 students each on this project. Work was also done by family and community volunteers.

The Maring-Hunt Community Garden is owned and managed by the Maring-Hunt Public Library, and in addition to gardening, this site is used for community events, educational opportunities, and recreation. For two studio semesters, I worked with a diverse group to continue a master plan for the site. It already had the garden plots and a Gateway to Growing pavilion completed by a previous class. During my year on the project, we built two more pavilions, the Market Pavilion and the Outdoor Kitchen, as well as established more nature play pockets.
